About the Author:

Gary J. Maylon has been involved with the stucco industry for over thirty-one years and has been involved in technical services and support for more than twenty years. He has worked for two of the largest manufacturers of expanded metal lath during this time, Alabama Metal Industries Corporation and prior to that Wheeling Corrugating Company, (no longer in the metal lath business) a division of Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel Corporation (WHX Corporation).

He is a past chairman of the Metal Lath Division of the Metal Lath/Steel Framing Association, past chairman of the Technical Executive Committee of Association of Walls and Ceilings International (AWCI), past chairman of the Steel Framing Technical Committee of AWCI, a former director on the board-of-directors of both AWCI, and The Foundation of the Walls and Ceiling Industry, a long time member of The Construction Specifications Institute, chairman of the C 1063 task group and a voting member of committee C-11 of The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), and a consulting member of committee 524 on stucco of The American Concrete Association. In 1999 Mr. Maylon received an award of appreciation from ASTM Committee C-11 for his many years of service to this organization.


Mr. Maylon is listed in Who’s Who Historical Society’s TM, International Who’s Who of Professionals TM, Marquis Who’s Who in Science and Engineering®, Marquis Who’s Who in America®, and Strathmore’s Who’s Who®.

Mr. Maylon currently holds seven industry related patents. In his thirty plus years in the stucco industry he has developed or improved many of the products used by the industry everyday.

Among his achievements Mr. Maylon states that he has published more than a dozen technical articles in various trade publications. Among these articles was a light gage steel-framing article that was part of a series that Mr. Maylon helped to edit into a compendium. The Association of Walls and Ceiling Industries International published this compendium as a steel framing primer. In 1996 Mr. Maylon wrote the article published and entitled “Expanded Metal Lath Installation for the Application of Portland Cement Stucco, The Deadly Sins 36.” in Construction Dimensions Magazine (published by AWCI)36 This was a two-part article, which was well received by the stucco industry. The Association of Walls and Ceiling Industries International republished these articles as a single document for industry distribution.

Technically, Mr. Maylon has been involved in numerous forensic investigations of lath and stucco jobs across the United States during the last thirty years. He has given numerous presentations on the subject of metal lath to groups and associations all across the United States.

Mr. Maylon has spent the last 31 years actively pursuing knowledge on the subject of metal lath and stucco, and he has shared this knowledge with many, in an effort to help the stucco industry remain in the forefront of North American construction markets.
